Autumn in Sand Lake Union Cemetery (Sand Lake, NY)
I think I've always loved being in a cemetery, only I never really thought much about it, or gave it any serious thought, until the last couple of years. But it's been a whole life passion really. There's not much I don't find enjoyable about spending time in a cemetery. The peace and quiet, the solitude, the sense of standing in hallowed ground, sacred ground, is one I feel strongly. And too, a sense of history, of the past swept away and yet memorialized here. The stonework itself, the art and architecture of the headstones, the mausoleums, the statuary, is worth a visit alone. I like the feeling of being able to reach out and touch the past, to commune with those who've gone before. Even just to contemplate Time itself, and to realize, that eventually we'll all be gone, all dust and memories, and how that thought helps let the cares of today simply fall away. And in the last few years an added passion for me concerning cemeteries has been cemetery photography. I've always sought out a cemetery to be alone with my thoughts, to read poetry of the dead poets, and to commune with the past, and the dead. But now I love capturing the beauty of cemeteries on film as well. And not only is it a most enjoyable way to spend a day, but too, we need to save their images now, before time and neglect, or encroaching civilization, steals them all away. And with them, a heritage of our past.
